Project Description
St Anthony’s stands as one of the Buckfast Abbey Trust’s most valuable assets, holding a prominent place within the historic estate. Based on a strong track record of successful repeat performance for the Trust, Classic Builders was appointed to undertake a highly considered and sensitive refurbishment and alteration project. The main objective was to transform the Grade II listed former farm building into a functional corporate headquarters. The completed landmark now serves as a modern, centralised hub housing a wide range of offices and vital administration spaces for the Trust, securing the building’s operational future for decades to come.
Converting a centuries-old agricultural building into high-specification office accommodation required engineering expertise and respect for the original architecture. The extensive scope of works commenced with a rigorous phase of enabling works designed to stabilise the aging structure. Heritage specialists carefully preserved the existing timber beams and traditional masonry, ensuring the building’s historic character remained intact. To adapt the agricultural layout for modern office use, the team carried out opening-up works to establish new, accessible entry points and internal thoroughfares. A complex structural steel package was then seamlessly integrated into the original framework, reinforcing the building to safely handle modern commercial dead and live loads without compromising its Grade II listed status.
Behind the historic exterior, Classic Builders installed a complex, custom mechanical and electrical (M&E) system to maximise energy efficiency. A defining feature of this future-focused installation was the integration of a large bank of 23kW solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. This renewable energy system reduces the building’s carbon footprint and operational costs, aligning the historic asset with modern sustainability standards. The internal fit-out was completed to a varying, high-quality specification, including the installation of acoustic ceilings, fire-rated partitions, durable commercial flooring, and sympathetic internal decoration.
Executing a major modernisation programme within the active grounds of Buckfast Abbey required meticulous logistical planning. The project team maintained constant, transparent communication with the Abbey’s estate managers to coordinate deliveries and manage shared access routes safely. By implementing strict noise mitigation measures and clear site segregation, Classic Builders ensured that the surrounding spiritual, tourist, and commercial activities of the Abbey continued smoothly throughout the construction period.
The final handover successfully delivered a state-of-the-art corporate environment that stands as a showcase of structural refurbishment, balancing 21st-century green technology with 18th-century craftsmanship.
