Project Description

The Tamar Valley Crematorium project comprises the construction of a purpose-built facility delivering a dignified, accessible, and operationally efficient environment for families, visitors, and staff.

The building includes a fully functional administrative suite to support day-to-day operations, alongside dedicated staff welfare facilities incorporating rest areas, kitchen space, changing accommodation, and essential amenities. High-quality public toilet facilities are provided, including fully DDA-compliant changing places accommodation to ensure inclusivity for all users.

A welcoming entrance lobby creates a calm and considered arrival experience, leading to private waiting areas that allow families quiet reflection. The chapel forms the heart of the building, supported by a modern audio-visual system designed to accommodate both traditional and contemporary services, including music, visual tributes, and remote participation.

Externally, a covered porte-cochère offers sheltered arrival and departure, while a separate hearse roadway and discreet operational route maintain privacy and dignity. The crematory is supported by dedicated service bays and back-of-house areas. The scheme is completed by landscaped grounds, a contemplative flower walk, generous parking, and a secluded private access road.

Set within a secluded woodland clearing with sweeping views across the countryside of Devon, the crematorium has been conceived as an extension of its landscape rather than an imposition upon it. Its low profile follows the natural contours of the site, stepping gently with changing ground levels to preserve long views and minimise visual impact. Nestled into the land, it feels grounded and entirely at home in its setting.

A carefully considered palette of Yennadon stone and English larch anchors the structure to its surroundings, echoing the textures and tones of the woodland. The rugged permanence of the stone and the warmth of the timber create a natural harmony, while muted pastel cladding reflects the subtle hues of sky and distant hills, allowing the building to recede softly as light and seasons shift.

The design and construction of Tamar Valley Crematorium were underpinned by a clear commitment to measurable environmental performance, long-term resilience and responsible construction practices.

Given the site’s susceptibility to surface water flooding, a robust drainage strategy was implemented, incorporating a below-ground attenuation tank and permeable resin-bound car park and pathways. This significantly reduces runoff rates, promotes infiltration and mitigates downstream flood risk. These measures strengthen climate resilience while aligning with sustainable drainage principles.

Operational carbon reduction is achieved through an integrated low-energy strategy. Roof-mounted photovoltaic panels contribute on-site renewable generation, reducing grid dependency. Crucially, waste heat from the cremator is recovered and transferred via an air source heat pump to heat the building, transforming a by-product into a valuable energy resource and materially lowering operational emissions.

Situated in peaceful woodland and built with traditional local materials, it provides not just a venue but a sanctuary where people can honour those they love close to home, reducing what has too often been a long, distressing journey for mourners.

The project was recognised in the following awards:

  • ‘Project of the Year (under £10m)’ – Michelmores Property Awards 2026
